Saturday [10/2], afternoon,20 schools, comprising over one thousand high school musicians and colorguard students from around the State will converge on ELHS for the 6th Annual "East Lake Classic Invitational". ELHS will kick-off the competition beginning at 4:30, expected to end at 10pm. The attraction: the East Lake HS Silver Sound Marching Band has engraved its reputation throughout the State by earning 7 consecutive first place finishes at the State level; a State record ! Since the event is judged by an independant panel of professional judges paid by ELHS Boosters, the Silver Sound will perfrom as an "exhibition only" band to avoid any conflict of interest. The notorious Florida Brass Drum & Bugal Corps will conclude the show.
Anyone who's attended high school is familiar with "the Band". What separates "band" from a Competition Marching Band is dedication; dedication by the students, parents, Band Boosters, HS staff, and the local business community. Competition bands demand tremendous amounts of time and money, far above those budgeted by the County School system. Typically, the competition band will begin practice 2-3 weeks before school begins, comonly referred to as "band camp".This is where the show begins, usually 3-5 musical arrangements surrounding a central theme enhanced by a theatrical Color Guard unit displaying coordinated perfection with the rifle and flag. The "show" is practiced day in, day out, all day on Saturday sometimes. No time for parades. Shortly after school starts, "the show" begins. The Band will travel to competitions throughout the State, where bragging rights are earned. The fall school semester concludes competitions, and the best of the best compete for State Titles; for East Lake High School, the dedication, time and money has paid off, figuratively speaking, as this is where East Lake has set the State record for consecutive first place finishes; seven.
This event is open to the public, and there is an admission charge,as this is the biggest fundraiser ELHS has.
