Grant Strong, a 14 year old aspiring beach volleyballer from Clearwater, Florida wins the 2017 AAU Boys Beach Nationals, the USA Jr. Beach Tour Nationals and the prestigious CBVA Cal Cup Tournament for Champions all in the same year !
What a summer of beach volleyball it has been for Grant Strong, traveling back and forth across the country from Florida to California playing beach volleyball.
It all started back in July traveling to the west coast to Ocean Park, Santa Monica in California for the CBVA Cal Cup Tour Stop # 3 Qualifier on July 9th as Grant Strong teamed up with friend and partner Ben Coordt of Hermosa Beach to win this event and qualify for the Cal Cup to be held at the end of the summer at Manhattan Beach.
From here Grant travelled down the coast of Southern California and teamed up with Gabriel Dyer of San Clemente to win the AAU Boys Beach Nationals at the FIVB World Series of Volleyball at Long Beach, California over Kyle Johnson and Camden Miner from Hermosa Beach (28-21) on July 11 - the first leg of the Triple Crown !
Grant then travelled back to the east coast to Florida to the beach at Siesta Key where he teamed up with Ben Coordt of Hermosa Beach, Ca. again to win the USA Jr. Beach Tour National Championships July 20-22 over fellow Floridians Jay Cravens and Ron Clapp in a hard fought final ( 21-9, 21-19) - the second leg of the Triple Crown !
To finish it off, Grant then returned to the west coast, to the Iconic Manhattan Beach, the home of beach volleyball, for the prestigious Cal Cup, August 26th, the end of the year Tournament for Champions from the 12 CBVA Tour Stop events. Once here, Grant then teamed back up with Ben Coordt, a local from nearby Hermosa Beach just down the Strand to compete with the best teams from the CBVA. It was here that Grant and Ben really found their groove and compiled a record of 6 wins on the day, along the way beating number one seeds Noah Keelin and John Belardi of Manhattan Beach 28-21 in the quarter finals, then in the semi finals Strong and Coordt were on top of their game and took out Gabriel Dyer and Cade Martin 28-13 to advance to the finals where Grant and Ben were again unstoppable and finished off Camden Miner and Kyle Johnson of Manhattan Beach 28-13 again to capture the prestigious Cal Cup and the third leg of the Triple Crown for Grant Strong.
Along the way, Grant also found the time for the Team USA National Selection weekend and was selected for the Team USA High Performance Boys Select A-1 Program under 17's to represent Team USA at the USA HP Championships at Hermosa Beach against the top teams from across the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada and the Czech Republic.
Teamed with John Belardi of Manhattan Beach, Grant and John put on a very respectable showing for a pair of 14 year olds playing up with boys two years older than them as they ended up 6th overall, taking a set from the eventual Champions Miles Partain and Alex Knight both from California as well as taking a set from the bronze Medalists, Javier Gomez and Randall Santiago from Puerto Rico and the 4th place Canadian team of Noel Camfens and Cole Irwin.
What a summer of great beach volleyball it has been for Grant Strong, representing the USA HP Beach Boys Youth Team and then winning the Triple Crown of junior beach volleyball !
Grant Strong now has 16 junior beach volleyball wins in the 14 Open Division since starting to play beach volleyball at the age of 8 years old !
