Lori Diez, a local author of children's books, recently paid a visit to Sacred Heart Interparochial School in Pinellas Park to discuss her book, Angel or Not? Angel for Sure! with students in fourth through eighth grade. It was a nostalgic visit because Ms. Diez had attended Sacred Heart School back in the seventies, and many classrooms were familiar to her.
Her days in Catholic school, as well as her children's experiences in Catholic school have inspired the story. The book is about a Sacred Heart fourth grader, Angel, who has to face many real-life problems, including a bully.
Ms. Diez said she wanted a book that portrayed family values and situations and school life that would be familiar to her own children. Ms. Diez said she that she was inspired to help people when as early as fourth grade she began to collect money for the rice bowl during Lent. Her desire to help people continues today and 75% of the proceeds from her writing goes to The Heart Gallery of Tampa Bay, an organization that helps children find permanent homes with loving adoptive families.
Ms. Diez shared many tips with the students. When asked by a seventh grade student if she ever got stuck when writing, Ms. Diez replied, "Yes, many times and I wonder where the story is going. Sometimes, I have to put it down for a while." The students at Sacred Heart loved sharing writing stories with Ms. Diez, and eagerly await her next book.
