Walk to Prevent Suicide – October 23, 2010

What: Do you know someone who has committed suicide? Do you know someone who has been affected by suicide? A local woman, Debbie Daharsh, whose son committed suicide last year is organizing a suicide prevention walk Saturday, October 23. The St. Petersburg, FL Out of the Darkness Community Walk is a fundraising walk supporting the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. There are more than 220 Out of the Darkness Community Walks taking place throughout the U.S. this fall. Funds will support vital research, education, advocacy, suicide prevention initiatives and programs to support those impacted by suicide.

Where: Elva Rouse Park (North Shore Park) (North Shore Dr/7th Ave) St. Petersburg, FL

- 8:30 a.m. – Walker registration
- 9:00 a.m. - Suggested media arrival
- 9:45 a.m. –Walkers begin. Walker will participate in a two mile walk marked off around the local area, followed by a rose ceremony to remember those who have past.
Why: It is estimated that each year, nearly 1 million Americans make a suicide attempt, more than 34,000 die by suicide, and more than 20 million suffer from depression. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among teens and young adults and the second leading cause of death for college students. Twenty percent of all suicide deaths in the U.S. are by veterans.
